Scholarship
Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund | Details
There is a scholarship program called the Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund. We will be giving details about the whole fund.
The Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund which is also known as AOSF helps families in choosing the best school for their child’s education. It helps in giving out scholarships to low-income, K-12 children who are not succeeding in their current environment.
The AOSF scholarships are made possible with the high donation of corporate and individual Alabama income tax liability.
Before applying there are two scholarship categories, Public School Access (PSA) and General Scholarship. Let’s break them down.
Public School Access (PSA)
You can only pick this if you plan on transferring your child from his/her current public school to a better one in a different district. We know how bad some schools are in their mode of impacting knowledge in a child, changing a child’s school is always the best option.
The AOSF will cover all mandatory transfer fees for your student each year.
However, some districts do not accept transfer students, so be sure in to check with the public school that you are interested in sending your child to.
General Scholarship
You can pick this option if you are interested in attending one of AOSF partner schools (Check them out HERE). The school includes approved private schools and two public boarding schools (the Alabama School of Fine Arts and the Alabama School of Math and Science).
AOSF will cover all mandatory fees and use the remainder of your scholarship towards tuition. The scholarship amounts are.
- Grades K-5: $5,000
- Grades 6-8: $6,500
- Grades 9-12: $8,000
Eligibility
To be eligible, “A student zoned for a “failing school”, whether or not they are currently enrolled in a public or private school. Only 25% of all scholarships can be awarded to students continuously enrolled in a private school during the previous school year.”
Also, “A public school student not zoned for a “failing school”. By law, scholarships may not be awarded to students zoned to a non-failing school until July 31st of each school year.”
Awards are given out on a first-come, first-served basis, with renewal students and new students zoned for and attending a “failed” public school receiving priority.
Any of the schools on the Participating Schools list are open to parents. Parents may apply to any school, but their kids must meet the school’s requirements.
