Subway Surfers Creator and Origin

Subway Surfers has become a global sensation, with over 3 billion downloads making it the most popular game of the last decade.

A modest Danish indie studio somehow managed to build a game that was downloaded on smartphones on every inhabited continent of the world.

How did this happen? Read below.

Kiloo and SYBO Games co-developed Subway Surfers. According to the CEO of SYBO, Mathias Gredal Norvig, said “SYBO came about when Sylvester and Bodie, the “SY” and “BO” of SYBO met each other at the animation school in Viborg where they teamed up and made their graduation movie together about a young rascal that runs from a guard when he’s caught painting street art.”

“SY” and “BO” graduated from animation school with the goal of becoming animators. When the smartphone was released, they realized that this was the platform for them to create incredible experiences in the palms of people’s hands.

They tried out a variety of games, including Cosmic Cab, Spray Can King, Graffiti Wars, and other unique game genres that were available on the app store in the early years.

When Temple Run was released in 2011, they realized that the runner genre was something that truly appealed to their gaming goals.

So they created the first Subway Sufers prototypes in January 2012, enlisted Kiloo as co-developers and publishers, and the game was released on May 25, 2012.

Subway Surfers was also intended to be a love letter to hip hop from the 1980s and 1990s. As a result, the team built a New York Update, and people loved it.

After the update, “People started writing us fan-mail requesting that we visit their towns and got really excited about things I thought were little details.” Jonas Georgakakis, The art director at SYBO Games said. “So i think that’s the moment where i realized it’s more that just a game, it;s actually an emotional atatchment people have to our project”.

The CEO of SYBO said he “Knew bodie from childhood and [he] knew that [bodie] was doing crazy game adventure.?

Mathias started as a consultant for SYBO, after a year he was asked to start full time. He became the managing director and after a couple opf years, In 2017, he became the CEO.
