Antonio Conte, Gary O’Neil, and Erik ten Hag Nominated For Premier League Manager of the Month

Man United Erik ten Hag, Tottenham’s Antonio Conte, and Bournemouth interim boss Gary O’Neil have been nominated for the Premier League’s Manager-of-the-Month award.

The Three men who oversaw outstanding results in September 2022 have been nominated for the Barclays Manager of the Month award.

Antonio Conte

Conte was appointed as the new head coach of Tottenham Hotspur on November 2, 2021, after Nuno Espirito Santo was fired the day before.

He agreed to an 18-month contract with the option of an additional year. Tottenham won 3-2 against Eredivisie side Vitesse in his first match as manager.

On November 7, 2021, he played his first Premier League game, a 0-0 draw at Everton. Conte became the first Tottenham manager to go unbeaten in their first eight league games on January 1, 2022, with a late win over Watford.

After winning 5-0 away against Norwich City and finishing fourth in the 2021-22 Premier League season, Conte helped Tottenham qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2019-20.

Gary O’Neil

Gary O’Neil joined the AFC Bournemouth coaching staff in February 2021 following an illustrious playing career..

Born in Beckenham, O’Neil progressed through the youth ranks at Portsmouth and became their youngest player when he made his first-team debut aged 16 years, eight months and 12 days in January 2000.

During his time with Pompey, O’Neil also earned a host of England youth caps, captaining the Three Lions at several age levels and winning nine caps for the under-21s.

Under former Cherries boss Harry Redknapp and after helping the club to the Championship title, the midfielder got his first taste of the Premier League in 2003.

O’Neil was signed by current England manager Gareth Southgate for Middlesbrough in 2007.

He went on to play 120 games in all competitions for the Teesside club before returning to his London roots with West Ham United.

His return to the Premier League ended after an ankle injury and the Hammers’ relegation, but he played a key part in their immediate return to the top flight, starting in the play-off final win over Blackpool the following May.

Reuniting with Redknapp at Queens Park Rangers in 2013, O’Neil would again start in a successful play-off final win, the Hoops beating Derby County at Wembley, although the day was bittersweet for O’Neil, who received a red card after 60 minutes for a tackle.

A hat-trick of play-off final wins for O’Neil came with Norwich City in 2015, two days before his 32nd birthday.

He appeared late in the game, utilising his experience to help see out the match for the Canaries and a return to the Premier League for player and club.

Into the latter stages of his playing career, the midfielder appeared for two seasons with Bristol City before taking in his final campaign as a professional with Bolton Wanderers.

In total, O’Neil made 251 Premier League appearances, and, but for a seven-game loan spell with Walsall as a teenager, played all of his football in the top two divisions, netting 38 goals during his career.

After hanging up his boots at the end of his year with the Trotters, O’Neil took his first role in coaching in August 2020 when he joined Liverpool as assistant manager of the club’s under-23s.

Working closely with the side’s manager Barry Lewtas, O’Neil switched to take up his current senior first-team coaching role under Jonathan Woodgate at AFC Bournemouth in February 2021.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, O’Neil was appointed interim head coach of the Cherries following the departure of Scott Parker.

Erik ten Hag

Ten Hag was appointed manager of Manchester United on April 21, 2022, for the remainder of the 2021-22 season until June 2025, with the option of extending for another year.

Later, Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren were revealed to be joining Ten Hag’s coaching staff.

Ten Hag’s departure from Ajax was confirmed on May 16, 2022, in order to begin his preparations as Manchester United manager for the 2022-23 season.

On 7 August 2022, Ten Hag suffered his first Premier League defeat, a 1-2 loss at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Ten Hag became the first Manchester United manager since John Chapman in 1921 to lose his first two Premier League games after a 4-0 defeat away to Brentford on 13 August 2022.

Ten Hag won his first competitive game as Manchester United manager on August 22, 2022, when his team defeated archrivals Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford. This was Manchester United’s first league victory over Liverpool since March 2018.
