Man United VS Omonia Match Report
In the most recent Group E Europa League match, Manchester United came from behind to defeat Onomia Nicosia 3-2.
Although the Reds dominated the game, the hosts took the lead in the first half. Bruno Felipe led the counterattack, which Karim Ansarifard completed to open the scoring.
In the second half, Erik ten Hag called on his bench, and the introductions of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial changed the game.
The attacking duo both scored in the second half, with Rashford tying the game before Martial put the Reds ahead. Despite a late goal from Panayiotou to keep Omonia in it, Rashford completed his brace minutes before the end.
For the majority of the first 45 minutes, the Reds were dominant and created numerous chances to go ahead.
Cristiano Ronaldo was at the center of the action, and his low effort was well saved by Fabiano in the Omonia goal. The number seven also worked well with Bruno Fernandes and Antony to set up the captain, who saw his effort bounce off the crossbar.
Antony came close to scoring with an effort reminiscent of his goal against Manchester City at the weekend, but the keeper parried the top corner-bound shot away.
The hosts took the lead just after the half-hour mark, completely against the run of play. A counterattack led by Bruno’s charging run resulted in Ansarifard’s effort being thumped past David De Gea at his near post.
Despite numerous opportunities to score, the Reds went into halftime trailing by one goal with much work to do in the second period. And it all started with a double substitution, with Rashford and Luke Shaw entering the fray.
No.10 made an almost immediate impact, equalizing eight minutes into the game. Fernandes found Rashford with an incredible pass from inside his own half – the chance almost seemed to have slipped away from him, but he kept possession and curled the ball into the bottom corner beyond Fabiano’s reach.
Martial completed United’s comeback ten minutes later, just moments after his introduction. Martinez advanced from defense to find Rashford, whose first-time flick found Martial, who was quick to unleash a shot that nestled into the bottom corner at Fabiano’s near-post.
Ronaldo had a few chances to extend our lead, the closest of which saw him denied by the post after Diogo Dalot did particularly well to set up the opportunity for his fellow countryman.
Rashford extended the Reds’ lead with his second goal of the night with six minutes remaining. He exchanged passes with Ronaldo, whose low and hard drive into the box was met at the back post by Rashford, who tapped home.
However, a nervous finish was on the cards after the hosts immediately pulled one back, with Panayiotou smashing it past De Gea in the United goal.
Despite the late scare, Erik ten Hag’s team held on to earn another crucial three points.
