Yolanda van den Herik was born and raised in the Dutch town of Papendrecht to a Christian family. Her father died in a vehicle accident when she was seven years old, leaving her mother, Ans van den Herik, to raise the two children.

She modeled for 15 years before deciding she wanted to settle down and start a family. Van den Herik relocated to Los Angeles in 1994 to raise a family after meeting and marrying Mohamed Hadid.
